AI Search Optimization Builds on SEO, Not Around It
AI search optimization builds on SEO rather than replacing it. It makes a business easy for AI search systems to find, understand and cite. It covers Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. I build it on the same foundation as traditional SEO: pages that can be crawled, indexed and trusted.
The difference is the output. Traditional SEO competes for a ranked link. AI search writes an answer from several sources, and a business either appears in that answer or it doesn’t.
Two disciplines handle that shift. AEO, short for answer engine optimization, makes each page resolve a specific question clearly. GEO, short for generative engine optimization, checks how a brand’s facts hold up when a system compares sources and writes a response.
There is one more change: query fan-out. According to Google’s documentation, one question can trigger related searches for definitions, comparisons, risks and alternatives. A page that answers only the opening keyword can look relevant and still miss the rest of the decision.
But none of this replaces SEO. A page that can’t be crawled or trusted isn’t better prepared because it carries an AEO or GEO label.
